Living & Working in Shanghai

My love for music has recently flourished. It all started with hanging out with newly found friends after the two-month lockdown.

I first came to Shanghai in the Spring of 2018. So many thoughts crossed my mind when mentally preparing myself for moving my life to the other side of the world.

I would like to tell you my story. The first time I came to Shanghai was in 2009, and let me say this, “Yeah! I agree. That was a long time ago.” I got a scholarship from my university to join the language exchange programme in Donghua University here in Shanghai. I would like to tell you my story. Coming from someone who is from the UK, Shanghai is the most convenient place to be. Not only is it easy to get to places on public transport, it is also easy to shop and order food.

My life in China marked the start of my independence. I came here on my own to live by myself. There were so many things that I had to do for myself in the beginning. I remember running back and forth at the store to get necessities for setting up my new home. In China, paying for things is conveniently done electronically through Alipay or WeChat pay.

I originally wasn't planning on moving to China. When I was looking for a place to work as an intern in 2015, I planned on going to Japan. I did not move to Tokyo, but moving to Shanghai was an experience I did not expect. Eight years later, I am still living in the city that has shaped me as a young adult.
