I first came to Shanghai in the Spring of 2018. So many thoughts crossed my mind when mentally preparing myself for moving my life to the other side of the world.

“How many people will be able to speak English in the city?” “Will I make a lot of friends easily there?” “Will I be able to buy the things I like?”

Aside from these things, the other consideration was the food, drink, and entertainment options available. I was so curious to get to know the city and what it had to offer. To my surprise, Shanghai had more options than even my hometown had to offer back in England!

My favourite cuisines outside of Jamaican food are Mexican and Japanese, both of which you can easily find in downtown Shanghai. Hatsune is my favourite option for sushi and other Japanese dishes, while Cantina Agave is a close second for a solid Mexican menu. Both owners of these restaurants are from those particular countries, too, guaranteeing the authenticity of the food and drink options. Although generally the diversity isn’t vast throughout China in regards to Western alternatives, I greatly appreciated the options that are available to try.

Growing up, I would have brunch every Sunday that my mum made. So besides these cuisines, brunch is something I continued to grow my love for whilst living in Shanghai. Finding places that offer different types of food was a huge bonus.  Different options are available: ‘cheap and cheerful’, flashy and fancy, cozy and comforting, or an additional free flow beverage package option is the cherry on top. Unlimited English tea or unlimited prosecco? That depends on the mood!
